BACKGROUND:

Tempo is the robotic daughter of Dr. Noele Lalinde, a Filipina scientist and geological expert. She's specialized for geological surveillance and, though native to the Philippines, made her debut in Mega City at the Advanced Robots Trade Show. There, she spent time with fellow robots Rock (better known as Mega Man) and Roll while their creator/father, Dr. Thomas Light, debated Dr. Lalinde over the concept of emotional attachment to robots. Everything was going great until the anti-robot terrorist organization Emerald Spears set off a bunch of explosions; after that, Tempo, Rock, and Roll kicked themselves into action. With a decision literally hard-coded into her, Tempo used her geological excavation skills to rescue people caught in the blasts and bring them to safety.

After the incident at A.R.T.S., Dr. Lalinde decided to remain in Mega City in case Dr. Light needed any more help with cleanup. Though Lalinde had debated against getting emotionally attached to one's own creations, Dr. Light convinced her to think otherwise—and from there, she restored Tempo's personality, which she had wiped after a very traumatic incident for both of them. Some time passed peacefully, but soon the insidious Dr. Wily rose to prominence again and threatened the safety of Mega City and the world. Mega Man donned his helmet and battled Dr. Wily and his technopathic alien cohort/boss among ancient ruins in central America, leaving Mega City mostly defenseless—but not entirely. As the far-reaching hand of evil wrought electromagnetic havoc in Tempo's new city, she used her drill and field experience to rescue and protect as many people as possible.

With the threat of aforementioned technopathic alien eventually taken care of and the leader of Emerald Spears in hiding or otherwise unaccounted for, Tempo has begun assisting in the lab again with Dr. Lalinde. She's also in the process of re-learning the kind of robot she used to be, before her mother wiped her emotions. Whatever happens, she's sure that the next time something goes wrong in Mega City and Rock isn't there to protect it, she'll be ready to do what heroes do best.

PERSONALITY:

Tempo has had a few different personalities since she was created, which might complicate things. The original Tempo was a goofy, lighthearted lab assistant who frequently cracked jokes about the things she was examining and overall had a pretty strong joie de vivre. Then the accident happened. We don't really know much about specifics, but we can infer that there was a very serious cave-in and Tempo nearly lost her life. At that point, Dr. Lalinde thought it would be best to remove all emotion and personality from Tempo to avoid a terrifying experience like that again.

Though her civilian nickname is Tempo, it was at this point in her life that she spent most of her time under her official designation as Quake Woman. With all emotion gone, Quake Woman based her decisions on cold, hard logic and strictly obeyed her programming down to the last return 0;. The events at A.R.T.S. brought Dr. Lalinde to restore Quake Woman's personality, but not without cost. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that she restored Quake Woman's ability to have a personality. All that truly remained of the robot she used to be existed in video documentation from laboratory sessions.

Tempo has been spending her free time analyzing those videos and trying to re-learn the way she had originally been programmed to act. It's an incredibly difficult process, even for an advanced A.I. such as herself, and even she isn't sure if she's getting it right. She has learned a few things, though, first and foremost that it is incredibly important to forgive people for their mistakes. She still loves her mother very much and recognizes the emotional drive behind what she did. Tempo has also inherited an understandable fear of enclosed spaces—it would be claustrophobia, but it's completely rational.

Parts of her colder, analytical side still remain, which are most evident when she's placed in an unfamiliar situation and/or with unfamiliar people. She might use bigger words or fewer contractions while she tries to get an objective understanding of what she's just been dropped into. With experience, the time period between "analytical robot" and "regular human" modes of communication will grow smaller and smaller. If you're another robot, or if the data available presents that as a likely option, that time period is basically nonexistent; it's one of the quickest ways to put her at ease.

Her analytical nature also leaves her much less likely to raise her voice or lose her temper in arguments. Her last major verbal confrontation left her calm and collected even when the burning in the other person's heart led him to smash family pictures and insult Dr. Lalinde's intelligence and honor. It might read as sarcastic or condescending to people who aren't used to interacting with her, but she finds that thinking logically is the best way to handle difficult arguments. In a similar fashion, she used to be a lot more energetic and playful, but after her sudden switch to utilitarianism and back again, she sometimes struggles with humor, be it making jokes or receiving them. Again, people might read it incorrectly (as dark or deadpan humor) if they don't know her, but it's almost entirely the result of her internal logic handling things more than it should be.

She might come off as excessively fake at times, since she may not have a point of reference for more complicated emotions. She's capable of learning, but she isn't perfect and won't necessarily get everything right on the first try. However, that's what separates her from the emotionless tool she used to be: Tempo is her own thinking, learning, developing robot. And if it seems like she would be easy to manipulate because of that? Well, one of the few constants bridging old Tempo and new Tempo is that she's heroic. She saves people's lives, not just because she was built for it, but because it's the right thing to do. And she knows herself well enough to know that she's proud of that.

POWER:

Tempo is made of latex, steel, and binary code, so she has the expected increased resilience and calculating speed of a robot, as well as a moderate increase in strength over a normal human. (She wasn't designed for strength, though, so don't expect her to go winning any strongman competitions.) The way she normally looks is pretty obviously robotic, but she does have a civilian form (hard-coded and immutable, but she can always put on clothes over it) that she can switch into when she needs to be inconspicuous. The civvie form doesn't grant her access to her drill hand, but that kind of ruins any attempt at blending in anyway. She can use the drill as a weapon, but mostly she just uses it to rescue people. Being a robot also means she'll have to be repaired by a mechanic instead of a doctor if she does suffer damage. Being a particularly advanced robot means the mechanic is going to have to be very good at their job if they don't want to cause any more damage.

That's the extent of her powers; she wasn't built to be a weapon like some other robots she could name. I'm not sure if the trappings of "is a robot" count as just one of her powers or not, so if this area needs clarification, paring down, etc., let me know and I'll do what I can.

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

I didn't expect to be a place so familiar and... anachronistic at the same time. This must be like what Rock experienced when he went to the dimension full of talking forest creatures. Still, this city seems suitably advanced for me to ask this question: Are there any mechanics in the area capable of repairing complex circuit structures? I am not injured yet, but if everyone has decided to save people's lives by jumping in front of moving vehicles, I can see it happening in short order.

Am I the only mechanical entity on this network? No, that seems unlikely. My serial number is LMN-001, but you may call me Tempo if you would like. I would be pleased to meet any other mechanical entities, whether robot, cyborg, or even a refrigerator with integrated social networking. I would be equally pleased to meet anyone else. I am not entirely familiar with government regulation of heroism and wouldn't mind some help having the benefits and detriments explained to me. Thank you.
